I suspect your problem is right there. You don't need the * after osg::ref_ptr<osg::Group>* That'd give you a pointer to a ref_ptr<> which points to a Group, which is almost certainly not what you want; unless I'm missing something (quite likely, I've yet to drink my first cup of tea of the morning...)
