SDL actually uses the RandR extension now to do this: http://keithp.com/~keithp/talks/randr/ However, if RandR is not available or your X server doesn't have the mode you have asked for configured, it will just use black out the window. I guess Producer could be modified to resize the screen if needed as well, but I am not sure what would be the benefit of it.
