Thankyouthankyouthankyou!! That was the answer. The default setting for TV5 uses dxt1&dxt3 compression, while the default for TV4 was straight rgb. Setting the TV5 "Tile Output Format" to rgb builds a model that works on the older Wildcat cards.
So, it wasn't an OSG problem. I'm not even sure if I can call it a software problem. But, at least I've got a solution now.
