I'll also join the CMake listserv, since, yes, documentation is definitely lacking.
It's the worst thing about CMake. The problem is, nobody has any time to do anything about it, whether at Kitware or other open source contributors. I think documentation must inevitably be a paid position in any endeavor, if they're going to be first class. I've bemoaned the documentation quite a number of times, but I've also stated that improving the docs is at the bottom of my list of priorities. First is Chicken, then OpenGL support for Chicken, then my game stuff, then better CMake docs. I'm not even close to getting to the end of that list. Really, I'm only in the final stages of rolling out the Chicken CMake build. Going that last 10 yards is tricky, because there's this period where you're supporting both CMake and Autoconf. It's a PITA; that is to say, Autoconf is a PITA. If we were free to just drop Autoconf that would be great, but we're too conservative to do that. There will be an interim period where we're handling both.
Anyways, the antidote to less-than-integrated docs is to get on the mailing list and ask questions. People are pretty responsive and not at all snotty about answering them.
