size_t would work. I didn't know about ptrdiff_t. It's in stddef.h, so
it's standard C too. Thanks for that piece of info.
So Robert, do you have a preference?
I don't have a preference, my preference will come about once I know which route will be the more portable, but I can't answer this question myself, we need the full range of platforms tested to know for sure.
