I wonder what happened with the performance trouble some people where
having when using a paged database on windows. I remember following a
long thread about that for a couple of days, but I don't remember any
definite post that the problem was fixed/turned out to be something
different. Are there any fixed related to this in 1.2?

OpenThreads Win32 mutex implementation was rewritten and this certainly helped with performance issues that some users had. 

This change doesn't solve all the problems that one can came across, you'll have to read the whole recent thread on database paging to understand it all.  It isn't bugs in the OSG, rather issues with OS/OpenGL drivers/databases.  The OSG usage can be tweaked to help deal with some of this issues.  Upgading to Linux also solves many of these too.
