Yes, that is why I wish they did read the reasons for using Creative Commons or GNU document license. Many professional paid coders write free, open source software beside their main work. But as you say, they decide. Not everyone is willing to do volunteer work. But in any case they should think twice before going to publishers who asks to transfer the copyright. How much money Gems book authors have received? E.g., Game Programming Gems authors. The OSG book may not make enough money for a person who does the work for money. If volunteer work does not fit to him, how would a very low paid work? All this could mean the OSG book would costs $$$ not $$, or not published at all. I'm not only talking here, I have a file named "osgguide" in my disk, but don't think I'm a qualified author.
