Depends on your circumstances. If you want to ship a smaller, single-file program instead of an EXE plus a raft of DLLs -- yes!

I've read the mailing list archives and a commen theme seems to be it's possible but not advisable. Seems like the plug-in system throws a wrench in things.

I don't think it's much of a wrench. You must explicitly make sure each plugin gets linked, but that's not a big problem, compared to the rewards.

So, have things changed or should I just stick with the DLL route?
I'm really trying to avoid shipping a bunch of DLLs with my executable.

  That was my motivation too.
