Ok and where did the Max test file come from? Is it trying to model
component transparency? Is the exporter options set to use RGB_ZERO? By
default?

No it's not. I took a look at their ColladaMax release notes and the
changes are probably due to the resolution of Bug 160.

It's not clear to me if it's correctly resolved. Perhaps you want to
reopen it and make it a dependency blocker for the bug you opened (Bug
229).
