Use MatrixTransforms when you are comfortable building the matrices yourself.  Use PATs when you want the API to figure out the order of operations (translate, rotate) for you.

When it comes to creating a scenegraph using PagedLODs which is more efficient for spatially organizing the nodes: MatrixTransforms or PositionAttitudeTransforms?
 
Are there any general rules of thumb when it comes to deciding when to use one or the other?
