This rang a bell in my head... I had forgotten to add the osgViewer library into Make/makedirdefs. I didn't pick up on this error because I built it myself within the osgViewer library, rather than a clean build from the top. I have now checked in the missing reference to osgViewer in Make/makedirdefs, a cvs update should fix the build issues.
