I think I tracked down your problem and sent a submission to Robert.
Thanks for helping debug this, you tracking down that it was a problem
with the extents made finding the problem much easier.

I tried setting the interpolateTerrain = false but same issue. It seems
to  
have something to do with the extent of the DEM and the extent of the  
textures. I am guessing it has something to do with the changes Robert
did  
regarding the cases where data crosses the dataline.
