This is one of the more vexing and frustrating aspects of Win32 development with VC++. I've found VC++6 to me almost completely dysfunctional, but the syntax for its project files is much more human-editable and manageable than the VC++7 or 8/2005 XML versions.

-You manually reflect changes back into .dsw (VC6)

  This is how it has been so hitherto.

- Use an external make system (CMake, SCONS)

  I think this is the way to do it in the future.
