I was planning on looking at just what the reader can do wrt transparency, so I imaging I will be hitting that one soon and I will post it. I will keep this email around so we can keep in touch.

It should be a matter of copying the image-load code from the diffuse color texture into the transparency loader, and then having it check if the mapping parameters and image size are identical. If so, the diffuse color image would need to be expanded to include and alpha that would be copied over from the luminosity of the transparency texture.

It's not trivial, but not hard either. Marco might be able to make some suggestions, if he's around and reading this.
