Nothing yet is in "the works" as the project hasn't started yet ;-) Changing the backend to not rely just on GDAL is still a possibility, but not a requirement at least for the client who funding this project. Once I get into the project in earnest I'll be able to scope more out of how I'll go about implementing things. At this point I'll get the community involved in this process, but be prepared to help out with coding if you want particular features developed.
