We purchased the full desktop, because we needed the sql support, but I am pretty sure you need the OpenGL support as the render surface is derived from that widget and so if that is part of the full then I think you need it.
By the way, it sounds like we might be working in sort of similar arenas although probably not similar applications so if you want to bounce ideas off occasionally, I would be cool with that.
