I'd be interested to see if mods to Windows could make it better, but it might be a bit of case of flogging a dead horse. There are real-time version for Linux such as Concurrents RedHawk: http://www.ccur.com/isd_solutions_redhawklinux.asp?o9=1 I have heard of OSG users using this for their sims.
