Yes, this is a very good idea and is planned. At some point, I need to
go through the INSTALL stuff and redesign it to better handle things
like you suggest. Specifically with Mac style user locations
(non-Unix), all of these conventions are completely wrong.

I noticed that examples ends up at share/OpenSceneGraph/bin
CMakeModules/OsgMacroUtils.cmake: INSTALL(TARGETS
${TARGET_TARGETNAME} RUNTIME DESTINATION share/OpenSceneGraph/bin )
should there perhaps be a way to set that in cmake if you prefer
another directory?
For example keeping them at the same directory as osgviewer etc..
