I completely understand. I was bouncing between three different version of osg (1.1, 1.2, and svn) until just recently when I was finally able to upgrade all of my applications up to the latest svn version (what a time saver) :-)
As for new users, I don't have a good answer at this point other than
hopefully the quick start guide will help define the process to get
everything up and running and the users can start experimenting with
what works best for them at that point.

Serge,
I know that for my case I just set an windows environment
variable to the install directory where the dll's are located and then
add this variable to the windows path environment variable so that
windows can find all the dll's without having to move them to the
directory of the executable you are trying to run.
I don't say that it's a problem for me, but I think it's one for new
users, who wants to test the examples without having to manually set env
vars or copy files.
All this thing is not a big problem, but as OSG is in a process to
facilitate things for new users, I think it should be more logical to
have everything ready for testing or using after the install process,
and not having manual operations to do.
And about env vars, I am dealing with different versions of OSG, so I
really don't like them. :)
