Thanks for the reply. Its there for ArcGIS yes (in the syswow64 folder) so I cannot remove or rename it permanently.
Renaming it does make QGIS 1.8 open again. QGIS master is fine in either case. Is there a longer term solution to this as I dont want to keep renaming a DLL each time I want to load ArcGIS/QGIS? It all worked fine until yesterday. Also, renaming the dll doesn't fix the error when running of a python script at the OSGeo4W command line.
