Hi FrankW,

I totally agree with you about the package separation and the deprecation of mapserver56. The metapackage would be perfect for those who just want everything installed. In UbuntuGIS, things are separated similarly: libmapserver, cgi-mapserver (apache) mapserver-bin python-mapscript.

It allows users to have a better control on what they install.

Alan

Alan and other folks,

I have recently updated the mapscript-python package to work against the
mapserver6 package. This was done for Paolo Cavallini who has a
mapscript based python plugin (a qgis to .map translator I believe) for
QGIS that he would like to be able to deploy easily.

Currently the mapscript-python package depends on mapserver which in
turn depends on apache since mapserver is usually most useful with
apache also installed and configured. However, for folks just wanting
to use qgis from osgeo4w this drags in a heavy dependency, and one
likely to conflict with existing http services on their machine.

So, I'm wondering about a few possibilities:

1) remove the apache dependency from the mapserver6 package, and instead
have a "mapserver-full" metadata package which might pull in related
technologies like apache and mapscript. The express install could be
setup to use this mapserver-full package.

2) split the mapserver runtime (dll) out into a subpackage -
"mapserver6-core" perhaps, that I could in turn depend on.

What do you think?

Also, I see the setup "express" install for MapServer is installing the
mapserver56 version. I'd like to update that to the mapserver6 version
as a step towards deprecating the mapserver56 packages. What do you
think? I notice the mapserver tutorial depends on 5.6 as well.

Best regards,
