Thanks Benoit,
I've copied your image to
https://www.dropbox.com/home/OSGeoLiveBackground so others can see it.
I like what you have done replacing the basemap. I'd be inclined to make
the image slightly darker, as I think we need to make sure the icons on
the desktop can still stand out against the background. We could partly
achieve this by mirroring the shadow image of tree and giraffes.
Can you please share the source gimp file with Astrid and me.
Astrid, thanks for your suggestions too. The "head of a giraffe" looks
good (I prefer the head over the blue sea background), but I think the
shadow version with the tree is better, maybe starting with Benoit's
version. I also think that the OSM background should be darkened so that
icons will stand out better against the background.

Hi Cameron,
I like what you propose and the image with giraffes you found.
I tried OSM at another zoom level (z16 I think), playing with your
proposal and gimp, trying to resize and align somehow the image and
the map.
Please find an attempt attached, if you like to experiment in the same
direction.
Best regards
Benoit

Comment (by camerons):
I've created a proposed OSGeoLive background image:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v3ub9k64w9oolwx/AAARy2MkorXCCwo2R9mm9rXoa?dl=0
It:
* Has an OSM background of Tanania
* Includes a giraffe (2 even) and a nice tree under a CC0 license
https://www.publicdomainpictures.net/en/view-image.php?image=57421&picture
=giraffe-silhouette-at-sunset
I created with gimp, and source file is available if you would like to
improve the image.
Cheers, Cameron

OSGeoLive <http://live.osgeo.org/>
self-contained bootable DVD, USB thumb drive or Virtual Machine based on
Lubuntu, that allows you to try a wide variety of open source geospatial
software without installing anything.
