As mentioned earlier, I'm building up an OSGeo based proposal for "Google Season of Docs".

*

Google Season of Docs <https://developers.google.com/season-of-docs/>(GSoD) is an initiative to bring open source and technical writer communities together to write documentation. Let’s use this initiative as a focal point to attract a collaborative community to pilot big ideas. In particular:

 *

Open source projects face sustainability challenges. How will docs
developed during GSoD be maintained long term?

 *

Can a writer’s expertise be amplified to help community users and
   developers write good docs?

 *

Could best practices developed in one project be amplified to the
   greater open source eco-system?

*

I'm wanting to pull together a compelling proposal, by listing a team of people with a cross section of skills who would amplify the impact of a technical writer. I'm hoping this team will include:
* 1 Official Google Season of docs tech writer.
* Maybe a few other tech writer volunteers who hear about the project and jump on board * Some OSGeo/OSGeoLive developers/users who can help write on a topic we choose. I'm volunteering for this. So has Johanna Botman. I'm hoping to find a few more. Astrid, I wonder if you'd be interested in helping with this? * Some core OSGeoLive team members who can help with git, the doc build process, and related issues. Angelos, Vicky, Nicolas, I'm wondering if you would mind offering your services in this regard? * It would be good to have a few of our translators offer to advise on the translation process and potentially offer to translate what is created into another language as part of our OSGeoLive documentation pipeline.

If so, I'm hoping you might be able to add your name, background and interest in this part:
*

       People keen to take part:

 *

Cameron Shorter: Co-founder and OSGeoLive Project Steering Committee
member. Co-editor of OSGeoLive doc templates and reviewer of most of
the 50 Project Overview and Quickstart documents. Ex-board member of
OSGeo Foundation. Keen to provide connections to our community and
to be practically involved in writing initiatives.

 *

Johanna Boltman: Ex-English teacher, IT admin, and user of open
source software as a geospatial officer at a local council. Keen to
   be mentored in writing docs.

 *

   … others?

 *

* Doc is at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yriJoybYjsCKhprNLNGGanw8HRA5Z8GhrNrA5RjavUU/edit#heading=h.s584ca6y83ac

Let me know if you need write access to the document.

Warm regards, Cameron

Adam, Victor, great to hear you are interested.

Sergio, good question (re what should we do).

I've been considering building out from our OSGeoLive documentation pipeline (which 100s of you have contributed to). To date, these have only focused on relatively easy documentation types of Project Overviews and Quickstarts. But they have been applied consistently to ~ 50 OSGeo projects, and have been sustainably maintained and translated for close to a decade.

Let's extend this pipeline to more challenging documentation types, like workshops or tutorials, or maybe even reference docs.

Our role would be to define a roadmap of tasks, and then guide a technical writer. (There are 3 and 6 month options).

I'd be interested to hear suggestions on what these tasks should be. Maybe have the writer create an exemplar tutorial set for one project, along with specific writing templates and tips, and then provide the templates to project developers to make it easier for them to write best practice documentation?

Warm regards, Cameron

OSGeo education folks,
I'm aware that many of you have expertise which crosses across education, writing and geospatial software. I'd be interested to hear who might be interested in bringing that expertise into an OSGeo "Season of Docs" initiative, as per below? (I'm personally keen to get involved).

As per below, Google has just launched a Season of Docs program, designed to bring open source and technical writer communities together, to the benefit of both. Awesome! I reckon our OSGeo projects should get involved, and I'm personally keen to be part of it. Anyone else want to join me?

Thank you for your feedback on the initial proposal of Google’s Season of Docs program! You’re receiving this email because you indicated that you’d like us to send you updates about the program.

We’re delighted to announce that we’ve launched the 2019 pilot of Season of Docs. Details are on our website: g.co/seasonofdocs <https://developers.google.com/season-of-docs/>.

Season of Docs is a Google program that fosters collaboration between open source projects and technical writers. It’s similar to Summer of Code, but with a focus on documentation and technical writers.

Would you like to take part as a mentor in the inaugural year of Season of Docs? Organization applications open on April 2, 2019. See the full timeline <https://developers.google.com/season-of-docs/docs/timeline>and join the announcement group at season-of-docs-announce <https://groups.google.com/group/season-of-docs-announce>to stay informed.

Please do tweet and blog about Season of Docs if you’d like to share the news. We want as many people to know about it as possible. We’ve provided logos that you can download and some example content on the press page <https://developers.google.com/season-of-docs/docs/press>.

If you have any questions, please email [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>.

Many thanks again for your valuable feedback on the initial proposal.
