One of the benefits that we in the ECF community [1] get from XMPP is that we use it to implement the OSGi 4.2 remote services standard (chapter 13 in compendium). With ECF's multi-transport nature, XMPP can be used as the transport for OSGi 4.2 service distribution and remote invocation. For some description of the recently introduced support for remote services in ECF see [2].

This is but one benefit of having support for XMPP-based communication in an OSGi environment. There are others of course...such as being able to build instant messaging applications that can inter-operate with existing and/or commercial messaging systems (e.g. GoogleTalk, Google Wave [3], jabber, etc).
