Isolation can be put in place thanks to the Conditional Admin Layer and the Security Layer. To be brief : Through these mechanisms, it is possible not to give any package (import/export) and service permissions to untrusted bundles.
For the security layer, see the project named sFelix. So there is no real isolation nor any good simulation. In practice, it works fairly well.
