wrt. getting involved - imho, there's a lower barrier to participation over
at OPS4J
(disclaimer, I spend a lot of time over there - it's also been a while since
I was a
student...)

for example, it wouldn't take long to setup an OPS4J wiki page to
investigate and
design a better build system ... then anyone signed up via
http://issues.ops4j.org
could take part in the discussions / coding.

for people who want to work on the internals of OSGi, either Equinox / Felix
would
probably be a better match, and just as rewarding

ps. let me know if you need any mentoring/support for projects hosted at
OPS4J...
