  NATO blocks access to Bulgarians

NATO has rejected granting security clearance to a Bulgarian general
for access to NATO secrets. Lt. Gen. Dimitur Georgiev, chief of the
air force general staff, had been granted a clearance by the Bulgarian
government. However, NATO security officials revoked his clearance,
according to the BGNES news agency in Sofia.

The action followed the refusal to grant access to secrets to
Bulgarian Ambassador to Brussels Emil Vulev, who gave up the post of
ambassador to the alliance, and Gen. Pavlomir Kunchev, who also was
denied a clearance.

No reason was given for the clearance denials. However, Bulgaria has
been a close ally of the Soviet Union, which had planted spies in
Eastern European militaries and intelligence services.
