http://www.geostrategy-direct.com/geostrategy-direct/secure/2004/11_02/1.as= p Iraq's Interior Ministry creates new security force BAGHDAD =97 Iraq has established a new security force for the war against insurgents. The Iraqi Interior Ministry has created a police commando force that has already operated in Baghdad and Samara. "This is a very disciplined unit," said U.S. Army Col. James Coffman, a coalition adviser to the force. "It is not a pick-up team taken off the streets. These are disciplined soldiers who are doing a very good job, and they're very impressive because of it." Officials said the new unit would have six battalions and focus on counter-insurgency operations. The force was formed at the initiative of the Interior Ministry. Over the last 16 months, the U.S.-led coalition planned and organized most of the Iraqi military and security forces. "From this regiment, we have police who have previous experience fighting terrorism and also people who received special training under the former regime =97 people who used to be in the army," said Maj. Gen. Adnon Thabit, an adviser for the Iraqi Interior Ministry. "They were all chosen on the basis of loyalty to Iraq, their support for the democratic change taking place in Iraq and from among those who have not committed crimes against Iraqis." The police commando force was initiated in September. By the end of the month, officials said, the ministry succeeded in organizing two commando battalions. So far, the police commandos have participated in a range of counter-insurgency operations. Officials said the force =97 equipped with heavy weapons, rocket-propelled grenades, AK-47 assault rifles, mortars and 9 mm pistols =97 performed well in raids of insurgency strongholds. The unit has been trained to raid insurgency strongholds in urban areas as well as to rescue those captured by abductors. In October, two police commando battalions captured 58 foreign fighters in a section of Baghdad nicknamed "Little Fallujah," officials said. The force, operating within 24 hours of an order, also captured a large number of foreign fighters in Samara. "We're only using 50 percent of the capabilities of these recruits and officers," Thabit said. "We are hopeful that within this month [October] we will reach up to 90 or 100 percent of our capabilities." Officials said the ministry was accelerating development of the commando force. The unit has begun training a third battalion and recruiting for a fourth and fifth battalion. In all, the force, including new recruits, numbers 4,000 people. ------------------------ Yahoo!
