Bomb rocks southern Thai town

Narathiwat (Thailand) - TWO bombs - one which exploded and injured 20
people while another, which was defused in the nick of time yesterday -
reflected the seething rage in this southern Thai province after 85
Muslim protesters were killed earlier this week.

An intelligence source said the bomb, triggered by a mobile phone,
exploded in front of a beauty salon near a hotel in Sungei Kolok.

An earlier bomb in the morning was defused by the police just minutes
before it was set to explode at a food stall where residents often
gather to give offerings to Buddhist monks.

The homemade device weighed nearly 10kg and was packed in a plastic box,
police said. On Wednesday night, a village headman assistant Prasit
Sukpaiboon, 45, was shot in the back of the head and died instantly in
Yala province's Raman district. Three other people were wounded in
separate attacks.

Over 200 protesters suspected of being key instigators of the violence
in Narathiwat's Tak Bai district will be questioned further by the
authorities, officials said, in a move to track down the key instigators.

Tensions in the three Muslim-dominated southern provinces have been
running high, with Islamic separatist rebels swearing to avenge the
protesters' deaths.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday called a meeting with senior
security advisers after separatists in the south warned of revenge
attacks. He will address the public on the crisis today after conducting
an investigation of the latest attacks. -- AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE
