Bomb kills 10, injures 20 in Pakistani city
    (Reuters)

    10 December 2004

QUETTA, Pakistan - A powerful bomb exploded near an army truck in the
southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta on Friday, killing at least 10 people and
injuring more than 20, officials said. The bomb, weighing at least 4 kg (8.8
lb),
had been attached to a bicycle, officials said. The blast in the centre of the
city wrecked the army truck and at least eight other vehicles. At least 10
shops in a business district were also damaged, witnesses said.Human body parts
and blood were splattered around the busy square, which was sealed off by the
security forces.

âIt was a mighty explosion,â said Abdullah, a witness who gave only one
name. âI saw people screaming and running and the dead and the wounded strewn
on
the road.â

Several victims were killed on the spot, and others died in hospital, doctors
said.

âWe have information that 10 people, including a Pakistan army soldier, have
been killed in the blast,â Major-General Shaukat Sultan, a military
spokesman,
told Reuters. Four soldiers were among the wounded, he said.

Naeemullah Khan said his father, a shopkeeper, was killed in the blast.

âHe was badly wounded and was covered with blood. I rushed him to hospital,
but doctors couldnât save his life,â he said, wailing.

Information Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed denounced what he called âa heinous
act of terrorismâ.

He said it was too early to allot blame for the blast, but added: âThe people
responsible will not go unpunished.

âThe terrorists want to destablise the country and create anarchy over here,
but they will fail in their designs,â he said.

The blast occurred a day after President Pervez Musharraf returned from a
foreign trip of almost two weeks which had taken him to Latin America, the
United
States, England and France.

Musharraf had said during the trip that Pakistani forces had smashed the
command structure of the Al Qaeda militant group within the country and had its
fighters on the run.

But officials say that militant networks retain the capability to launch new
attacks.

Pakistan, a key ally in the US-led war on terrorism, has suffered a spate of
terror attacks in recent years targeting Westerners, religious minorities and
government officials.

Police blame most of the attacks on extremists furious over the governmentâs
support for the United States and the ousting of the hardline Taleban regime
in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Baluchistan, Pakistanâs largest but most backward province, borders
Afghanistan and is a home to hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees.

Pakistani security forces have deployed thousands of troops along the Afghan
frontier to stop cross-border movements by the Afghan Taleban.

The Taleban enjoy huge support in the Islamic schools of this province, which
are mainly run by Pashtun clerics. Most of the Taleban are also Pashtuns.

But militant Baluch nationalists demanding greater political and economic
rights have also launched attacks in the province.
