10 killed in car bombing
>From correspondents in Karbala
December 20, 2004

TEN people were killed when a car bomb exploded today at a bus station in
the Iraqi Shiite shrine city of Karbala in the second deadly attack there in
less than a week.

The attack happened just a short distance from the tomb of Imam Hussein, the
Muslim prophet Mohamed's grandson and one of the most revered figures in the
Shiite faith.

Witnesses said the car had tried to enter a police recruiting centre but the
street was sealed off so it was driven instead into the nearby bus station,
where it exploded in a ball of fire.

Ten people were killed and 40 others wounded, said doctor Ali Adawi of
Karbala general hospital, while police said more than than 10 minibuses were
destroyed.

A bomb attack last Wednesday near the Imam Hussein mausoleum in Karbala left
10 people dead and 40 wounded.

The bombings raised fears of an upsurge in violence in the predominantly
Shiite communities south of Baghdad ahead of next month's national elections.

Iraq's Shiites make up 60 per cent of Iraq's 25 million population and are
expected to dominate the next government.

The bombings are the first major violence in Karbala since clashes earlier
this year between US-led forces and supporters of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada
 al-Sadr.

Last March, a series of bombings around Karbala killed more than 100 people
gathered for the Shiite religious festival of Ashura when Muslims mourn Imam
Hussein's death in 680 AD.
