Morocco arrests six for condoning terrorist acts (12/20/2004): Morocco arrests six for condoning 'terrorist acts' Six suspects, belonging to Al Hijra Wa Takfir, arrested near Rabat after several people complain of threats, violence. RABAT - Moroccan police have arrested six people suspected of membership of a banned Islamic fundamentalist group and condoning terrorism, police said Sunday. The men, whose identity was not given are believed to members of banned religious group Al Hijra Wa Takfir, and stand accused of holding subversive meetings, threatening people and using violence. "Hand-written papers and religious books, some of which incite violence, were seized with the suspects," aged 23 to 48, police said. They were arrested Wednesday at Layayda near Rabat after several people complained of threats and violence. Al Hijra Wa Takfir is among a number of fundamentalist groups accused by Moroccan authorities of violence against those it claims are violating Islamic law in the name of Islam. Moroccan Justice Minister Mohamed Bouzoubaa said Thursday that Moroccan extremists had been found to have ties with foreign networks in Egypt and Afghanistan including Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda. It was not know whether the arrests were linked to string of suicide attacks in Casablanca in May last year killed 45 people, including the 12 bombers and wounded dozens of other people. Spanish newspapers reported Sunday that Spanish police suspect that one of four Moroccans arrested Friday in the Canary Islands is a leader of a Moroccan Islamist group that is believed to have ties to Al-Qaeda. Hassan El Haski, 41, who was wanted for his suspected role in the March 11 attacks on commuter trains in the Spanish capital which left 191 people dead, was believed by Spanish police to be "the head at the European level" of the Islamic Group of Moroccan Fighters, El Mundo said. The ABC newspaper said he was also suspected of being behind the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh on November 2 in Amsterdam.
