[Report by Mark Eeckhaut: "Van Gogh Investigation Leads to Brussels"]

[Text] Brussels -- Netherlands investigators are traveling to Belgium
this week in connection with the inquiry into the murder of film-maker Theo
van Gogh. The Netherlanders are interested in Abdelkader H. (39), a
Moroccan Muslim extremist who is in a Belgian jail. H. had close contacts
with the group whose members included Theo van Gogh's killer.

Abdelkader H. was arrested in March of this year in a major
counter-terrorist action in Belgium aimed at members of the GICM [Moroccan
Islamic Fighters Group]." H. has already been sentenced to death in
Morocco for involvement in terrorist activities. The Moroccan courts are
also requesting his extradition for suspected involvement in the deadly
attacks in Casablanca on 16 May 2003.

The investigators founded coded telephone numbers in H's telephone book.
Using information from abroad, the police were able to decipher the code.
One of the people H. called was apparently Ismael A, a member of a group
of Muslim extremists in the Netherlands known as the Hofstad Group. A. was
arrested with a number of others in The Hague following the killing of Theo
van Gogh.

Mohammed B., Theo van Gogh's killer, was also a member of the Hofstadt
Group. Prior to van Gogh's murder, the Netherlands Secret Service viewed
him as a figure on the fringes of the group.

The Netherlands investigators will simply be exchanging information with
their Belgian colleagues while in the country. There is no question of a
formal letter rogatory, authorizing the Netherlanders to themselves question
H.

There is nothing new about the fact that Muslim extremists from various
countries and even continents maintain contacts with one another. During
the recent trials of Muslim extremists in Brussels, including the Trabalski
case, it was already evident that the suspects were in contact with
like-minded individuals throughout Europe. Tarek Maaroufi also telephoned
notorious extremists in Milan and France. Other defendants made frequent
trips to the radical mosque in Finsbury Park, London, which is now closed.
