Suspicious substance burns woman on Tokyo subway train

Unidentified liquid was poured on the seat of a train on the Tozai
subway line in Tokyo on Sunday, giving a woman light burns and making
other passengers nauseous, police said.

All passengers on the train were forced to get off at Kiba Station
while emergency workers clad in protective suits examined the
substance. Police are working to identify it.

Police said a 21-year-old woman on the train bound for Toyo
Katsutadai contacted a worker at Otemachi Station at about 10:50 p.m.
on Sunday, saying a liquid appeared to have been poured on a seat in
the train.

Investigators said the woman got on the train at Kudanshita Station,
entering the second carriage. When she sat down she found the seat
was wet. The liquid, which police said appeared to be an alkaline-
based substance, gave the woman light burns, and she was taken to a
hospital for treatment.

Two other men on the train were taken to hospital after complaining
of sore throats and light nausea because of the smell of the
substance.

Services on the line were resumed at 11:50 p.m., but in order to
examine the liquid, police blocked off the exits and entrances at
Kiba Station on the line. About 30 police and firefighting vehicles
arrived at the station as workers wearing protective suits inspected
the substance.

A 21-year-old woman who was on the train described the scene.

"Just before we arrived at Kiba Station, there was an announcement
saying, 'This train is being taken out of service,' and we were made
to wait about 5 minutes at the station," she said. "Then there was an
announcement saying 'An unusual smell has been detected and it is
being examined.' We were then led out of the station, but I didn't
notice anything on the train." (Mainichi and wire reports, Japan,
