Four killed in rocket attack
>From correspondents in Quetta
December 25, 2004

FOUR Pakistani paramilitary personnel were killed and five others injured
after coming under rocket attack while patrolling near the border with Iran,
officials said today.

âFour personnel of our force were killed by a rocket while five others
received bullet wounds when saboteurs attacked a patrolling party on late
Friday
night,â Frontier Corps lieutenant colonel Rizwan Malik said.

Their vehicle was one of two patrolling in the Newano area, about 650km west
of Quetta when hit by the rocket propelled grenade, he said.

The force had launched a search for the attackers, Malik said.

An anonymous caller identifying himself as âColonel Doda Baloch of the
Baloch Liberation Armyâ, later said his group was responsible for the attack.

The caller claimed 17 soldiers were killed in the attack, but refused to
give further details.

Pakistan's sparsely-populated southwest Baluchistan province is riven by
unrest. Some tribals leaders oppose a government plan to establish at least
three garrisons in the region, which is rich in natural resources.

The low-level tribal uprising is also fuelled by resentment that foreign
investors and richer neighbouring provinces are creaming off profits from the
region.

Earlier this month 11 people including an army soldier were killed when a
powerful bomb exploded at a crowded market place in Quetta.
