D.C. Starts New Anti-Terror Tip Line for Businesses Updated: Friday, Jan. 14, 2005 - 5:09 AM WASHINGTON - Terrorists may be snooping around businesses in the District, trying to buy materials or equipment or acquire skills or licenses that would promote their activities. The Metropolitan Police Department are asking the business community to pitch in and report suspicious activity through its news Operation TIPP. MPD has created a toll-free tip line for businesses to report things that are out of the ordinary. The number to call is 1-877-YOU-WATCH for businesses and their employees to report suspicious activity to the police. "Operation TIPP is designed to make it easier for businesses to recognize and report suspicious conduct that may not be criminal per se, but may raise suspicion because the conduct does not match a business's experience in dealing with legitimate customer requests," said Chief Charles H. Ramsey, in a news release. "Through Operation TIPP, this type of information can be captured, analyzed and followed up by the appropriate local, regional or federal authorities." Trained police professions answer the the confidential phone calls and callers don't have to provide their names or contact information, although they are encouraged to do so. The tip line is funded by a federal Homeland Security grant. (Copyright 2005 by WTOP. All Rights Reserved.) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
