http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticle.asp?xfile=data/focusoniraq/2005/January/focusoniraq_January181.xml§ion=focusoniraq Iraqs defence minister wants to hand Chalabi over to Jordan (DPA) 23 January 2005 AMMAN/CAIRO- A bitter dispute between Iraqi interim Defence Minister Hazim al-Shalan and his political rival Ahmed Chalabi escalated on Sunday, a week before democratic elections for Iraqs transitional national assembly. During a visit to Amman, Shalan said he would have Chalabi arrested and handed over to Jordan. He has fled to the city of Basra (southern Iraq) and is being protected by the governor who belongs to the Badr Brigade (the militia of the Shiite party SCIRI), the Arab daily al-Sharq al-Awsat quoted Shalan as saying. At the start of the 1990s, Chalabi, who was once favoured by the Pentagon, received a prison sentence in absentia in Jordan for embezzling money from a bank. Jordanians, who declined to be quoted by name, welcomed Chalabis possible hand over, but said they did not wish to interfere in domestic Iraqi election campaign issues. Therefore, they would only accept the politician being handed over by Interpol and not directly from Baghdad. Chalabi had publically accused Shalan of corruption last week. Shalan now wants him to stand trial for defamation. A spokesman for Chalabis party, who stands good chances of winning a place on the largest Shiite election alliances list of candidates, spoke of false accusations and said it was not up to the minister to order his arrest. enditem UNRESTRICTED ------------------------ Yahoo!
