CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A Pakistani man taken into custody after a police officer
saw him videotaping downtown skyscrapers was sentenced to six months in
prison Monday on several charges - none related to terrorist activities.

Kamran Akhtar, 36, was sentenced on five immigration charges, including
failure to follow a court order to leave the United States, possessing false
identification cards and making false statements to investigators. He
declined to make a statement to the court.

After Akhtar was arrested in July, investigators found a videotape in his
camera showing the 60-story Bank of America tower and the skyscraper that
houses the Charlotte office of the FBI (news - web sites). Other tapes
showed buildings and landmarks elsewhere in the United States, authorities
said.

Akhtar, who has already been jailed for six months, will be turned over
shortly to immigration authorities for deportation.

The charges to which he pleaded guilty carried a maximum sentence of 33
years in prison.

Federal authorities are not known to have uncovered ties between Akhtar and
terrorists.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Broyles said the government's investigation
has not been closed, but declined to say whether he expected additional
charges.

Akhtar's attorney, George Miller, said his client was looking forward to
being reunited with his wife and children, who are expected to join him in
Pakistan.

"He desperately misses his family," Miller said, adding that he believes the
case is over. "They have had six months to conduct this investigation," he
said.
