Assault against suspected militants started in Nalchik NALCHIK. Jan 27 (Interfax-South) - Special forces have started an armed operation against Islamic extremists blocked in a residential house in Kabardino-Balkaria's Nalchik. "Negotiations had been held with them for over 30 hours to force them to surrender voluntarily, but they were fruitless. After that, a decision was made to launch the force phase of the operation," a spokesman for the Kabardino-Balkarian Interior Ministry told Interfax. Meanwhile, another source from the ministry later told Interfax that the assault had been suspended. "Kabardino-Balkarian law enforcement officers started an assault operation to neutralize a group of extremists blocked in two apartments of a residential house in Nalchik at 8:38 a.m. Moscow time. Two grenade launcher shots were fired upon the house, after which two women appeared on the balcony of one of the apartments in which the extremists are hiding. The firing has been suspended," the source said. -- When you're catching spies, you have a bad counterintelligence service. When you're not catching spies, you have a bad counterintelligence service.
