Swannie Al Qaeda alert Could Swanbourne be a base for "Al Qaeda types" to gather Australian security information? Yes, according to Nedlands council's planninng boss, Daniel Arndt. Mr Arndt said concerns were raised by the Special Air Services that people with ulterior motives could look into the Campbell Barracks when the old Swanbourne high school was redeveloped. He said the SAS had concerns over the height of some of the houses planned. The council and the government development agency, LandCorp, had had extensive meetings with the SAS. Detailed assessments were done on the issue of people overlooking the site, and LandCorp had agreed to modify the subdivision and lower the ground level of some of the homes. It is planned that the site will have 129 homes in total, comprising 56 single lots and four group housing sites with 73 dwellings. Public comment on the development closed last week, and Nedlands council said it received about 25 responses, mostly relating to traffic concerns and the potential for residential dwellings on the northern side of Narla Road. Margaret McKenna, who lives in Narla Road, which is in the Town of Claremont, is not happy about the redevelopment. She said Nedlands council did not care what she thought because she was across the border. She was worried about the disruption earthworks would cause and the increased traffic in the area when the houses were built. Ms McKenna said she decided not to submit a comment to the council because she thought it would be a waste of time. "They say they consult, but it's a bit of a farce," she said. "It is a money-making venture for everyone involved." There have also been complaints from Aboriginal elders. They say that homes will overlook their cultural grounds and they want a cultural centre on the site. Meetings have been held between LandCorp and the elders to try to resolve the issues. LandCorp recently announced it was seeking a joint-venture partner for the project. ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> DonorsChoose.
