Facts on North Korea
(Reuters) -- Following are some key facts about North Korea, which
declared on Thursday that it possesses nuclear weapons and that it is
withdrawing from six-nation efforts to end its atomic arms ambitions.
* In 1945, Soviet troops entered the northern half of Korea and U.S.
troops the southern half to disarm the Japanese, who had ruled the
peninsula as a colony for 35 years.
* In 1948, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was
established in Pyongyang under Kim Il-sung, a Soviet-picked,
anti-Japanese resistance figure.
* In June 1950, North Korean troops attacked the South in an attempt
to reunite the country. Chinese "volunteers" later joined them in
battling U.S.-led United Nations forces. The July 1953 truce left
the two Koreas still technically at war.
* In 1994, North Korean leader Kim Jong-il inherited power from his
father, Kim Il-sung, in the first communist dynastic succession. The
elder Kim has been named "Eternal President." State radio recently
quoted Kim Jong-il as saying he would in due course hand the reins
to one of his sons.
* North Korea is the world's most militarized state relative to
population, with active forces of 1.14 million and reserves of 7.45
million. South Korea has about 650,000 active forces and 3 million
reservists, backed by 37,000 U.S. troops.
* Tensions rose on the peninsula in late 2002 after the United States
said Pyongyang had admitted to pursuing a nuclear arms program in
violation of a 1994 agreement that was to have frozen its atomic
weapons ambitions.
* There have been three rounds of six-party talks since 2003, but
little progress has been made. A fourth round due last September did
not go ahead because North Korea pulled out.
