Maoists kill six policemen

Six policemen were killed when Maoist guerrillas stormed a school
building in a Karnataka village and hurled hand grenades, police
officials said Friday.

The surprise attack took place Thursday midnight in Pavagada taluk near
Tumkur district, about 150 km from here.

Director General of Police S.N. Borkar told IANS on telephone that the
men from the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) were camping in the
school building when they were targeted.

"A portion of the school building collapsed, resulting in the death of
six KSRP personnel and injuries to another dozen policemen," Borkar
said.

He said it was "definitely the handiwork of Maoists, who first
disconnected power supply to the school and threw explosives including
grenades.

"It appears to be a retaliatory attack over the death of two Maoists in
Chikmagalur district (Feb 6)," Borkar said.

The injured policemen were rushed to Tumkur and Bangalore hospitals. The
police have rushed reinforcements to the spot and are hunting for the
Maoists.(IANS)
