Britain says it foiled terror plots involving British citizens Agence France-Presse London, February 22, 2005 | 01:29 IST Security forces have foiled a series of terrorist attacks, some of them said to have been planned by British citizens, the government revealed on Tuesday in documents that coincided with the release of a new anti-terrorism Bill. The threat of a devastating strike involving biological, chemical or radiological weapons was still real, the government warned. The reported plots amounted to clear evidence of a "real threat to British people and British interests" from terrorists affiliated to Al-Qaeda, according to one of four documents made public. Many "involved in these terrorist conspiracies have been overseas nationals, but we have been increasingly aware of the involvement of British nationals," the document said. Emphasising the need to beef up Britain's anti-terror law to counter the threat of a September 11-style attack, Home Secretary Charles Clarke, the interior minister, today unveiled a set of proposals to restrict the movement of terrorist suspects. Terror mastermind Osama Bin Laden's Al-Qaeda group had "exceptional techniques and capability" and was "consistently ambitious," the document said. "They are prepared to use any means to mount attacks, no matter what the consequences for their victims or themselves," it cautioned. "Attacks so far have used conventional means - although often in unconventional ways," the government paper said. ------------------------ Yahoo!
