The date will be fixed as soon as the committee in charge completes its preparatory work, which included shaping the country's electoral constituencies, His Highness Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani said. Shaikh Hamad was talking at a press conference with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder during his visit to the country. An announcement on the date of the parliamentary elections has been expected since last year, when in a national referendum Qataris voted for a new constitution that would see direct election of the Parliament (Shura.) According to the constitution, all Qataris, regardless of their sex, will be eligible to vote 30 out of 45 members of the Shura Council. The remaining 15 will be appointed directly by the Emir. Talks with the German delegation focused on improving cooperation in the fields of construction, technology, transportation, science and tourism. Asked whether the talks included the purchase of army and military technology, the Emir said: "No doubt, Germany has good weapons, but we did not discuss the issue. Qatar would not waste its finance on military matters." Schroeder said ties between the two countries had not lived up to their potential. He said Germany was keen to strengthen economic and political relations with Qatar. He expressed appreciation for the Emir's far-sightedness and said Qatar's achievements and democratic endeavours represented a model for all Gulf countries. Asked to comment on the stepping down of the Syrian-backed Government in Lebanon, the Emir praised the Lebanese Cabinet, and said it had fulfilled the demands of its people. Shaikh Hamad, who is expected to travel to Syria soon, expressed his hope that peace would prevail in the relationship between Syria and Lebanon. Schroeder said Germany supported demands for an international investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. He said Germany called for an immediate withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. ------------------------ Yahoo!
