Bakar, regarded as the spiritual head of terror group Jemaah Islamiah (JI), was yesterday sentenced to 30 months jail for his involvement in the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians. Dismissing the jail sentence as a "walk in the park", Labor's foreign affairs spokesman Kevin Rudd said he fully supported the government's decision to call on Indonesian authorities to appeal against it. "This sentence is inadequate," Mr Rudd told journalists in Brisbane. "Thirty months for a person who heads an organisation which is responsible for the mass murder of more than 200 people is simply not enough. We believe a much harsher sentence is necessary." Mr Rudd said a harsher sentence would send a message to south-east Asia that those involved with terrorist organisations would be severely penalised. "At present, the Howard Government is increasingly focused on Iraq. The war against terrorism in south-east Asia has not been won yet," Mr Rudd said. "JI is alive and well and we have gaps in our counter-terrorism strategy in this region, in our own neighbourhood, our own backyard, in dealing with the enemy here." Mr Rudd said large gaps in dealing with terrorists remained in intelligence, policing and border control systems across south-east Asia. He said he was "deeply concerned" about radical Islamic terrorism in the southern Philippines and its flow to other south-east Asian countries, including Indonesia. "Australia and other like-minded countries like Japan should be working with our friends in south-east Asia to plug these gaps," he said. - AAP [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
