The Times of India Online Printed from timesofindia.indiatimes.com > Cities?> Thiru'puram? Fatwa issued against marrying Communists P K SURENDRAN TIMES NEWS NETWORK?[ MONDAY, MARCH 07, 2005 02:06:48 PM ] THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Worried over the success of the growing popularity of the CPM in the Malappuram district of Kerala, at least one panchayat committee of the Muslim League, has issued a 'fatwa' prohibiting Muslims from marrying Communists. It also sought to deny Reds in marriage the last rites in the mosque premises. The fatwa, in the form of a pamphlet, says "giving a daughter's hand in marriage to a Communist or giving a share of ancestral property to such a person in the family, was not just infra dig but cannot be justified under Islamic views and practices." The committee also stated that the siblings of the alliance cannot be bequeathed with ancestral property. What set the alarm bells ringing in the League was the big success of the 18th CPM party congress held recently in the district. To counter the flocks crossing over to the sickle-and-hammer camp, the League had tried to paint the district green while the CPM painted the town red. The decree issued by the Karuvarakundu Panchayat committee of the Muslim League is in a pamphlet form. Titled, "The Soil and Soul of Malappuram", based on a 'fatwa' issued earlier by Islamic scholar Dr Yusuful Kardavi, also directed the community to be vigilant against burying the body of a communist in a mosque. The document warns those Muslims propagating Communism of grave religious consequences if they continued with their activities. Terming the move as ridiculous, CPM District Secretary K Saidalikutty told that such 'fatwas' did not even exist in Islamic countries such as Saudi Arabia, which was considered a staunch proponent of stringent Shariat law. He hoped that people will not fall prey to such propaganda of the priesthood. -- ----------------- R. A.
