Moroccan Sept. 11 Suspect Appears in UK Court

LONDON (Reuters) - A Moroccan man facing extradition to Spain for suspected
terrorism offences connected to the Sept. 11 attacks could face torture in
his homeland if the request were granted, a defense lawyer said Monday.

Farid Hilali is believed to be linked to suspected Spanish al Qaeda cell
leader, Imad Eddin Barakat Yarkas, also known as Abu Dahdah.

Defense lawyer Edward Fitzgerald told Bow Street magistrates court that
Hilali would face prejudice in Spain on grounds of race and religion, and
that his prospects would be even worse if he returned to his homeland
Morocco.

``If he is at some stage returned to Morocco, there is a real risk that he
will be tortured and possibly subjected to the death penalty,'' Fitzgerald
added.

Spanish prosecutors said in a European arrest warrant that a man calling
himself Shakur -- an alias for 35-year-old Hilali -- phoned Abu Dahdah
several times in the month before the U.S. attacks.

``Hilali tells Abu Dahdah that he had a month to go and that he had some
important matters to do ... that he had entered into the aviation sector,
that he had slit the throat of the bird,'' a European arrest warrant said.

Hilali has been held at Belmarsh high security prison in London on charges
of illegal immigration since September 2003 and on suspected terror offences
following Spain's extradition request.

The trial was adjourned to April 21.
