U.S. pushes for actions against Iran3/9/2005 8:00:00 AM GMT

Despite lack of evidence that the Islamic Republic is trying to develop a
nuclear weapons program, Washington called on the international community to
consider actions against Iran for refusing to abandon its nuclear
activities.

"Unfortunately, we've not seen that kind of attitude from Iran, and we may
have to consider what other action to take if Iran does not fulfill its
obligations," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said.

Boucher added that Tehran must suspend uranium enrichment permanently and
not temporarily.

"Refusal by Iran to do this, that and the other is not going to get them
anywhere," Boucher said.

"The only way Iran is going to get anywhere with the Europeans or with the
rest of the world is by accepting freely its obligations and undertaking to
fulfill them," he added.

Mr. Boucher, moreover, stated that as required by the International Atomic
Energy Agency, the global nuclear watchdog, Iran should "fully comply with
its obligations".

"It needs to sign the additional protocol. It needs to turn this temporary
suspension into a permanent cessation of enrichment activities," he said,
adding that the way to do that was through the IAEA and the EU-3 package
that had been put together.

"So the posturing by Iran is not going to get them anywhere. Refusal by Iran
to do this, that and the other is not going to get them anywhere.

Last week, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Hassan Rowhani warned that his
country will stop all confidence-building measures if it didn't reach an
agreement with the European Union, and it was referred to the United Nations
Security Council.

"If the talks fail due to the U.S. pressure and Iran's nuclear case is sent
to the UN Security Council, we will stop all confidence-building measures
and the regional security will face problems," Rowhani said during the
International Conference on Nuclear Technology and Sustainable Development.

Iran and the EU, who have finished three rounds of negotiations since Iran
suspended uranium enrichment, are set to begin a new round of talks on the
Islamic Republic's nuclear programme.
