Qatari women all set to don the political mantle

By Barbara Bibbo', Correspondent
Doha : Qatari women are being looked at as serious parliamentary candidates.

National women will take part in a women's conference to encourage
potential female candidates to participate in the forthcoming elections,
a senior official said. The Permanent Election Committee (PEC) is to
announce the date for a national forum open to all Qatari women. The
event is intended to boost their participation as voters and as
candidates in the country's first parliamentary polls.

"The PEC decided to hold an open conference on women's participation as
candidates in the parliamentary elections," said Shaikha Aisha Bint
Khalifa Al Thani, sister of the Qatar's Emir His Highness Shaikh Hamad
Bin Khalifa Al Thani and chairwoman of the PEC. "The initiative comes
out of our belief in the necessity to establish a continuous
communication with the community."

Parliamentary elections would be held at the end of this year or early
2006, the Shaikh Hamad said last week. As per the new constitution,
Qataris, regardless of their sex, are to elect 30 out of 45 members of
the parliament. The remaining 15 members will be appointed by the Emir.

"Our main goal is to activate political participation in the Qatari
community through meetings, seminars and training courses," Shaikha
Aisha said.

Speaking to Gulf News, Khalid Bin Jaber Al Thani, secretary-general of
PEC, said women are to play a decisive role in the elections.

"We at the committee believe women will be the backbone of the elections
and will play an important role in boosting public participation," he said.

Fatma Al Khatir, director of the internal office at the State Audit and
the first Qatari woman to become auditor, said Qatari women are ready to
enter politics.
