Lebanon Set to Return Pro-Syria Government After Protest By REUTERS Published: March 9, 2005 Filed at 12:04 p.m. ET BEIRUT (Reuters) - A majority in Lebanon's parliament nominated recently resigned pro-Syrian Prime Minister Omar Karami Wednesday to form a new government, political sources said. A total of 69 deputies from the 128-member chamber chose Karami in consultations with President Emile Lahoud, the sources said. The pro-Syrian president was now bound to appoint Karami, who resigned last week under popular and opposition pressure, as prime minister-designate. Opposition MPs did not nominate anyone to lead the government, handing Lahoud a list of their demands instead. They included calls for the resignation of the country's security chiefs and a demand for the authorities to reveal who was behind the Feb. 14 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. Karami will have the difficult task of forming a government of national unity, bringing in a number of opposition figures, the sources said. His government which quit last week comprised only pro-Syrian ministers. ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> DonorsChoose.
